Operas performed by Czech and international talent, as well as Czech ballet performances on both a classical and a modern stage.
The glorious Narodni Divadlo (National Theatre) is a symbol of Czech culture and was built in the middle of the 19th century due to an undercurrent of demand for an independent theatre. The theatre was partly funded by public donation, and the first stone was laid in 1848. Just before the theatre was due to open, it was almost destroyed by fire. More money was raised, and a second National Theatre was finished. Today, traditional opera, drama and ballet performances share the stage with more avant-garde works by contemporary composers and dramatists. The theatre is one of the most striking examples of modem architecture in Prague, presenting three cubic buildings with façades of glass brick, and acts as a permanent home to the National Theatre Company and Lantema Magika.
