Not far from Karlovy Vary is another spa city of Marianske Lazne. Visitors coming here are not only attracted by healing mineral waters but also by great golf courses. The Mariánské Lázně golf club is one of them. It is an exceptional example of Scottish- and Irish-style golf courses of the early 20th century; the British King Edward VII was one of the first to open this course in 1905. Of the 18 holes on the course, only two were built in 1978, replacing an original pair of very short, cramped holes. The greens are tiny in comparison with newly-constructed golf courses but are well guarded by bunkers. For the most part, the course is flat, making it first appear to be quite easy, but it is full of hazards and demands a tight, technical game.
